Don’t Skip Lunch – Why What Happens After a Family Meeting Matters

Not long ago, I met with an extended family to talk about generosity across generations. Why? To engage younger family members. To tell family stories. To share philanthropic values, dreams, and goals – now and well into the future.

To say we were excited to help facilitate the conversation is an understatement. We love this kind of work and feel honored to help bring it to life. These kinds of gatherings are often part of broader family wealth conversations that help connect generations in meaningful ways.

Planning Meaningful Family Conversations Across Generations

To do the gathering justice, we began planning months in advance, starting with big-picture goals and working down to the details. Who should attend? What did we hope to accomplish? Which topics should go on the agenda? Where should we meet? When should we start and end? What kind of refreshments would we serve?

Attention to detail matters. And in this case, it paid off.

The quality of the discussion was outstanding. Each person shared a memory of when someone outside the family had shown them generosity and what it meant at the time. There were moments of laughter, and a few tears. It was genuine, reflective, and unforgettable.

Afterward, rather than congratulating themselves on a successful meeting, our clients did something more useful: They reflected. What went well? What could improve? What should they try next time?

Their conclusion was simple.

“Next time, let’s go to lunch afterward.”

Why Family Connections Matter After the Conversation

It’s an easy thing to overlook.

Not to revisit the agenda. Not to extend the conversation. Just to sit down together.

Because a shared meal does something a boardroom can’t. It softens the edges. It creates room for side conversations and follow-up questions that don’t quite fit in a formal setting. It gives people time to process in their own way, at their own pace.

For many families having family wealth conversations, the focus is on getting the conversation right – the message, the tone, the timing. These things matter. But what happens immediately after may matter just as much.

Before everyone disperses, before life resumes its normal pace, there’s a small window to nourish these treasured bonds in a more natural setting.

You don’t need another agenda. Sometimes, you just need a table.
